Vol. 98 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Civilian Employment for Army Men.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that a large number of men leaving the Army seem to be unaware of the arrangements made by the Government to assist them in their re-employment in civilian occupations; and, if so, if he will, for the information of such men and all those who desire to advise and direct them, issue a statement as to what special machinery has been set up for the purpose of finding employment for men who are being demobilised.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. The booklet issued to men on demobilisation gives particulars of the steps to be taken by them to obtain employment or to secure reinstatement in former employment. Any further information which demobilised men may require will be given them on application, either personally or in writing to my Department, where an official has been appointed to assist men in regard to difficulties generally arising out of their resumption of civil life. The existence of these facilities, to which I referred in my reply to the Dáil question on the 15th May last, is well known to men about to leave the Army and they have been largely availed of. Such further information as may be deemed necessary regarding the steps taken to assist demobilised men in securing employment will be announced from time to time.
