Vol. 98 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Tyres.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that considerable quantities of new tyres for small motor cars and vans are being offered for sale at excessive prices; and, if so, if he will take steps to control the distribution, and regulate the price of such tyres, and to make them available to users of permitted vehicles.

I am not aware that considerable quantities of new tyres for small motor cars and vans are being offered for sale at excessive prices. When the rubber supply position became acute early in 1942, the manufacture of tyres for light motor vehicles was discontinued and since then no new tyres for these vehicles have been available from home sources. It is not yet possible to make new tyres available for light motor vehicles and, therefore, the question of controlling distribution does not arise. The prices of tyres for light motor vehicles have been controlled since early in 1942.
