Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Cyclists Corps.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider favourably the question of making a free grant to members of the Army Cyclists Corps of their pedal cycles when leaving the Army as a help to them in connection with their work in civil life.

I regret that it is not feasible to give effect to the Deputy's suggestion.

Will the Minister say how many would be involved in this?

About 2,900.

Would the Minister not give them the option of buying them at £1 each?

They have the option of purchasing them at auction.

Seeing that Córas Iompair Éireann was able to get the lorries at a discount, surely the poor fellows who rode these bicycles all through the emergency should get the option of buying them at a small price. Córas Iompair Éireann would not go to the auction.

That is exactly where they went.

Córas Iompair Éireann. The company went to the auction and purchased there, and by doing so probably got the lorries at a cheaper price than the valuation price.

They got the best ones first.
