Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 7 Nov 1945

Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Wagons for Tuam Fair.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that Córas Iompair Éireann provided only 58 wagons on the 17th October, 1945, for Tuam cattle fair, which were totally inadequate for the fair which is the largest in the west of Ireland; and, as a result, several people had to remain with their stock in the streets until late that night awaiting the arrival of more wagons; and, if so, he will authorise Córas Iompair Éireann to take steps to prevent a recurrence.

I would refer the Deputy to my statement on the Adjournment Debate in the Dáil on the 25th October. As I stated on that occasion, the information supplied to me by Córas Iompair Éireann is that a total of 309 wagons was provided for Tuam fair on October 17th, of which 287 arrived at Tuam before 6 p.m.

That is not the information you got from the Tuam Town Commissioners and the Tuam Traders' Association?

The Deputy can be certain that my information is accurate.
