Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Transport in County Clare.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why about 12 wagons of turf were held up for over two weeks in Ennis railway station last month before being transported.

I am informed that no such hold-up has taken place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of wagons suitable for the conveyance of turf in what is known as the West Clare section of Córas Iompair Éireann, and the location and numbers of those wagons lying idle for the week ending 18th August, 1945.

I am informed that there are 74 wagons suitable for the conveyance of turf on the West Clare section, none of which was lying idle during the week ended 18th August last.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why turf producers in Doonbeg and Shragh bog areas are not, as heretofore, allowed wagons to send their turf direct to consumers, but instead have to transport their turf seven miles to Kilrush and sell it to Messrs. Glynn and Sons, Kilrush, who are provided with occasional wagons for its transportation.

The marketing facilities available to turf producers in the Doonbeg and Shragh areas this year are precisely the same as in previous years and there is no foundation for the suggestion that producers are under any compulsion to dispose of their turf to any particular individual or firm.
