Vol. 98 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Removal of Lighting Cowls.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state when he expects the work of removing cowls from public lighting throughout the country to be completed.

Last May, all local authorities throughout the country were authorised by my Department to have the cowls removed from public lighting. It was hoped that this would have been done before the end of last summer. I understand, however, that it has not been practicable in a number of cases to remove cowls as no alternative shades were available. If the necessary supply of glass shades can be obtained, I am informed that all cowls will be removed by the end of this year.

Would it not be much better to take the cowls off and leave the lamps without any shade, rather than leave the cowls on, seeing that these cowls quench about 70 per cent. of the light?

I understand that the lamps require certain protection from stormy weather.
