Vol. 98 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Offaly Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has received representations requesting the Land Commission to acquire and divide the lands of Mr. Foran, Newtown Rhode, County Offaly; and if he can now state what action has been or will be taken in this case.

Representations have been received requesting the Land Commission to acquire the lands of Newtown held by reps. of James Foran (deceased) but in present circumstances it is not proposed to take any action in the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state if he has received representations from and on behalf of small holders, cottage tenants and landless men urging the Land Commission to acquire the untenanted lands of William Delaney, Cannakill, Croghan, County Offaly; whether any inquiries have yet been made concerning the congestion existing in the area; and, further, what action, if any, has been or will be taken to meet the wishes of the local people in this case.

There are no proceedings pending for the acquisition of the lands of Cannakill, owned by Mr. William Delaney, and the Land Commission are not at present in a position to make inquiry or take any other action in the matter. Representations have been received urging the acquisition of the lands and have been noted.

Is the Minister aware that the landlord is also in the possession of two other large farms and that in this particular case he refused to make a sub-letting to cottage tenants to enable them to graze their cows, with the result that they had to sell the cows?

I am not so aware.

Will the Minister cause inquiries to be made in this case in view of the fact that the local cottage tenants, as Deputy Davin pointed out, have been refused even grass for a cow so that they have to graze their cows on the high road? In view of the very special circumstances, will the Minister cause investigations to be made in this case?

I will make some inquiries in the matter.
