Vol. 98 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Laoighis Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state if he has received repeated applications on behalf of small holders, cottage tenants and landless men urging the Land Commission to acquire and divide the estate of James Lalor (Record No. U./8125), County Laoighis; and if he will state the reason for the action of the Land Commission in refusing to do so.

Representations have been received urging the acquisition of the Lalor Estate, Record No. U.8125, County Laoighis. After due consideration of the circumstances, and having regard to existing conditions, the Land Commission decided to take no action in the matter.

What does the Minister mean by existing conditions? Is it the existing conditions of the landlord or the existing conditions of the landless men?

It is difficult to talk about the landlord in this case as the term is usually understood. The amount of land involved is a farm of only 80 acres.

Does the Minister admit that congestion exists in the area?

The Deputy has referred in his question to cottage tenants and landless men. These categories are not included in those whom we primarily regard as congests.
