Vol. 98 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commercial Travellers' Petrol Allowances.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is in a position to grant a special allowance of petrol to commercial travellers who are dependent on a petrol allowance for their livelihood.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he is prepared to grant a supplementary allowance of petrol to commercial travellers who use their motor vehicles in the course of their employment.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, inasmuch as other professional persons are in receipt of a special allocation of petrol for their professional work, he will consider providing special additional allocations for commercial travellers who depend for their livelihood on their ability to move about.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 5, 6 and 7 together.

The supply position is not such that applications for supplementary allowances in respect of new classes can be entertained. I am not at present in a position to grant supplementary allowances in the cases of commercial travellers, but their position will be specially considered in the event of a further improvement of the supply position.

Can the Minister see any reasonable likelihood that a supplementary allowance may be granted to commercial travellers in the near future?

I would not say there is a likelihood of a supplementary allowance in the near future.
