Vol. 99 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo School Accommodation.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for a school at Sheeane, Burren, Castlebar, County Mayo; further, if he is aware that the children from this area are unable to attend the available schools at Burren or Greenanns owing to the long distances and the mountainous country intervening; and if he will have a school erected for the benefit of the Sheeane children.

I have had inquiries made regarding the educational facilities available for the children residing in Sheeane district and I find that there are 14 children between the age of six and 14 years who have more than the statutory distance, as provided in the School Attendance Act, to travel to school.

In view of the comparatively small number of children concerned I am not satisfied that there is need for a school at Sheeane but if arrangements can be made locally to have the children conveyed to school the question of allowing a grant towards the cost of a transport service will be considered. My Department is at present in communication with the parish priest about the matter and it is hoped that a satisfactory solution will be reached at an early date.
