Vol. 100 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the tenants of the Irish Land Commission estate (formerly Arthur R. Verschoyle's) in the townlands of Carrowcushlane and Cloonaslane, County Mayo, have appealed to the Land Commission to have their lands drained and other necessary improvements carried out as those lands are waterlogged and useless for the tillage purposes on which they have to depend for a livelihood; further, that the former landlord used to carry out drainage work periodically on the estate; whether he will arrange that these necessary works be carried out before the vesting of their holdings in the tenants; and if he will send an inspector to have the lands examined and to see how the value of the lands compares with the valuations.

Mr. Boland

Representations have been made to the Land Commission by the tenants on the Verschoyle estate, Record No. S.5420, including the tenants in the townlands of Carrowcushlane and Cloonaslane, regarding the necessity for the preparation of a suitable drainage scheme for the estate.

The Land Commission are informed that the former owner of this estate was not liable for the upkeep of embankments or watercourses.

The question of drainage and improvements has been noted for investigation before the revesting of the holdings, but the Land Commission are not yet in a position to state when these matters can be dealt with.
