Vol. 100 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Turf Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make the necessary Orders to permit lorry-owners to carry private owners of turf banks and those assisting them to save turf, to and from bogs.

I am prepared to consider applications from public hauliers for permits authorising them to use specified lorries for the transport of organised groups of private turf workers. Having regard to considerations of public safety the grant of permits will be limited to hauliers who maintain a fleet of three or more lorries.

Does that include liability under the Workmen's Compensation Acts?

I do not get the relevancy of that question.

If anything happened in the course of the conveyance of the workers to the turf banks or on the return journey, would they be covered under the terms of the Workmen's Compensation Act?

That is a question of law.

I do not know where the question of the Workmen's Compensation Act comes into this.
