Vol. 102 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Fish.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that transport delays are seriously interfering with the sale of fresh fish sent from Dingle to distant markets; that a minimum of three days is required, under present conditions, to convey this perishable foodstuff from Dingle to Manchester, Birmingham and other English centres; and whether he will direct Córas Iompair Éireann to arrange for the more expeditious transport of fresh fish.

Fish consigned from Dingle for shipment reaches the North Wall, Dublin, within 24 hours of despatch. This is substantially the same service as obtained prior to the emergency. The main delay arises from the fact that perishable traffic is not now accepted for conveyance by the London Midland and Scottish Railway Company's midday steamer. This, I understand, is due to unsuitable rail connections at Holyhead.
