Vol. 102 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holidays (Employees) Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is prepared to amend the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939 (No. 1 of 1939) so as to provide that all workers, including port, harbour and dock workers, shall be entitled to two weeks' holidays, with pay, in each year.

I refer the Deputy to a reply given to a Dáil Question by Deputy Pattison on this subject on October 24th, 1945.

May I refer the Minister to the reply given to Deputy Byrne a few days ago when he intimated that if he wished to raise the question of holidays with pay for dock workers, he could do so by question and make reference to the Holidays (Employees) Act? I now do so and ask the Minister will he introduce legislation so as to prevent strikes spreading?

That is the question to which I have replied.

The Minister has given no reply to the further question that I have asked, that is, if it is his intention to prevent the spread of strikes in Dublin by introducing a Bill to give holidays with pay, as is approved by every decent employer in the country?

I have just replied to that question.

You have not, Sir, and the strike will spread.
