Vol. 102 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Evictions.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that a number of decrees for possession have been granted recently in the courts; and if, in view of the scarcity of rooms, flats, cottages and houses in the City of Dublin, and of the failure of the local authority to secure adequate supplies of building materials to enable them to press ahead with their building programme to meet the demand for housing accommodation, he will introduce legislation to postpone the execution of possession orders against families, especially those with clear rent accounts, until suitable alternative accommodation is available.

I am, of course, aware that a number of decrees for possession have been granted recently in the courts, but the number of such decrees granted in Dublin in the course of the past year has in fact shown some falling off as compared with preceding years. As regards the second part of the question, I am not prepared to promote legislation on the lines suggested by the Deputy.

Will the Minister say what is to become of people who have been evicted and who have nowhere to go? There is no accommodation in Dublin for anybody. I would ask him to introduce even as a temporary provision some measure to stop evictions in Dublin.
