Vol. 102 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the need for a public telephone at Newcastle, County Dublin; and if he will have one installed there.

As I have already stated on a number of occasions, it is the intention to install a telephone call office at every Post Office which has not one at present. The scheme, which will involve heavy construction work, has been started but will take about five years to complete and I cannot, at this stage, say at what particular time within that period a call office will be provided at Newcastle, County Dublin.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the number of applications from the residents of Booterstown Avenue for telephones, both for business purposes and for private use; and if he is now in a position to arrange to install telephones for these people.

Applications for telephone service which have been received from a number of residents in Booterstown Avenue have had to be refused because of lack of spare wires in the underground cables and shortage of exchange equipment. Additional plant is on order but it will be some time before all the waiting applicants can be provided with service. In the meantime, every effort is being made to meet applications for business lines.
