Vol. 103 No. 1

Written Answers. - Population Statistics.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the total estimated population in June, 1946, distinguishing between the number of males and females.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state, in relation to the estimated population in June, 1946: (a) the average excess of births over deaths; (b) the average net migration; and (c) the variation in population in the year ended 30th June, 1946.

The information to the Deputy's two questions is, so far as it can be ascertained, set out in the following table:—

Middle of Year

Excess of Births over Deaths from middle of previous year

Balance of passenger movement (including migration) from middle of previous year +=balance inwards -=balance outwards

Estimated Population

Males

Females

Total

1946

25,590

-1,847

1,518,000

1,489,000

3,007,000

NOTE.— The figures for the estimated population should be treated with reserve. It is not possible to be definite that the variation in population from year to year is caused solely by the ascertained excess of births over deaths and the balance of passenger movement. The estimate of population given is based on the population revealed by the Register of Population complied in December, 1943 for rationing purposes as affected by the best available statistics.
