Vol. 103 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kiln-drying of Grain.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the abnormal amount of farmers' grain intended for feeding purposes, required to be conditioned by kiln drying, he will consider providing an allocation of coal for this purpose.

In the continuing difficult anthracite supply position it is not possible to make an allocation to commission millers for the drying of grain intended for animal feeding.

Is the Minister aware that his Department has recently authorised hotels and institutions to buy supplementary supplies of Irish anthracite to heat their establishments and, if coal is available for that purpose, surely it should be made available for the limited period when it would be required effectively to dry the wet grain the millers have to handle at the present time?

There is no coal being used for heating purposes that would be suitable for this purpose.

I say that if you make it available some of the small millers will use it and be glad to get it.
