Vol. 103 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jute Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a shortage of jute is adversely affecting the operation of the factory of Messrs. Goodbody, Clara, Offaly; if he will take all necessary steps to ensure that jute supplies will be made available to keep this factory working as, if it were to close down, upwards of 500 local people would be deprived of their employment, with consequent serious loss to the town; and if he will give an outline of what he proposes to do to assist this industry to keep in production.

There is a shortage of jute which is affecting employment in the factories of the firm named in the question. Difficulties affecting the exportation from India of jute allocated to this country have recently been removed. The allocated quantity has been purchased by the firm and will be imported as soon as possible. An approach has been made to the Indian Government for an increased allocation of raw jute, and an allocation of jute products.
