asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the amount of the overdraft in connection with turf cutting, in the case of each county council, on the 31st March, 1946; and the gross total of such overdrafts.

The following are the amounts of overdrafts on county council turf production accounts on 31st March, 1946:—

In order to keep overdraft interest at a minimum a number of county councils have made loans to their turf accounts out of credit balances on their general accounts. Particulars of such loans not repaid by turf accounts at 31st March, 1946, are as follows:—

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state, in respect of each county council, the total amount of money paid by way of interest on overdrafts in connection with turf-cutting expenditure in each of the years ended 31st March, 1944, 1945 and 1946; and the total amount paid in interest in each year.

The rate of interest paid by county councils in respect of overdrafts on their turf production accounts is 3 per cent.
