Vol. 103 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Great Northern Railway System.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention was directed to the White Paper on the subject of transport reorganisation, issued by the Government of Northern Ireland some time ago; whether he is aware that the scheme outlined in the White Paper contemplates severing, from the main system, that portion of the Great Northern Railway situated within the Six Counties; if so, whether he has examined the proposal in the light of the effect it is likely to have on the portion of the system within this State; and whether he has made any communication in regard to the matter to the Government of Northern Ireland or to any other interest concerned.

I have seen the White Paper to which the Deputy refers. While it recommends a merger of transport undertakings in the Six Counties, including the part of the Great Northern Railway system there, it does not contain any detailed proposals in this regard. In the circumstances, it is not at present possible to assess the likely effect on the Great Northern Railway Company if such a recommendation is implemented. I have not made any communication in the matter to any of the interests concerned.
