Vol. 103 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Leix Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the owner of the Trench estate, Glenmalyne, Ballybrittas, Leix, agreed, some time ago, to sell the estate to the Land Commission for division among the large number of deserving applicants in the Ballybrittas area; if he will state what action, if any, has since been taken by the Land Commission to acquire the estate; and whether they recently agreed with the owner or his representative to let the lands for a further period of two years.

Mr. Boland

I would refer the Deputies to my replies to previous questions in regard to these lands. The position is unchanged and is that the representations made to the Land Commission have been noted for consideration, when circumstances permit. The Land Commission have not been in communication with the owner of the estate or his representatives regarding the letting of the lands.

Is the Minister aware that this is a case in which the owner of the estate is anxious to dispose of it without delay; is the Minister further aware that this farm is situated in a most congested area in County Leix where there are large numbers of deserving applicants awaiting the division of this land? In view of that fact, could the Minister state why the Land Commission has not made any move since this matter was first raised?

Mr. Boland

I cannot. Probably they are too busy.

In view of the Minister's unfavourable reply I wish to raise this matter on the adjournment.

There is prior notice from Deputy Hughes on Question 22.
