Vol. 103 No. 8

Unemployment Insurance Bill, 1946—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to enable effect to be given in the State to certain contemplated arrangements under which the Government of the United Kingdom are to undertake to meet the cost of paying benefits, in respect of unemployment in the State, to certain persons who served in the forces of the said Government and to amend the Unemployment Insurance Acts, 1920 to 1945.—(Minister for Industry and Commerce).
Ordered: That the Second Stage be taken on Wednesday, 27th November.

When will the Bill be circulated?

This evening.

I should like to ask whether this Bill contemplates merely giving effect to the British intentions so far as ex-British Army personnel are concerned or whether it goes to the extent of amending the employment insurance legislation in any respect?

It is primarily for the purpose of giving effect to the arrangement with the British Government concerning ex-British soldiers, but there are some provisions regarding the payment of unemployment insurance benefit to ex-members of the Irish Army resident outside.
