Vol. 103 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sending of Foodstuffs to Great Britain.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether private individuals will be permitted to send turkeys to Great Britain; and if he will also state the conditions under which such turkeys may be sent.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will permit citizens of this country to send gifts of foodstuffs, including turkeys, to relatives in Great Britain, during the Christmas season.

With your permission, a Chinn Chomhairle, I shall take Questions No. 15 and No. 16 together.

I do not propose, save in the case of turkeys, to relax the present restrictions on the sending to residents in the United Kingdom of gifts of such foodstuffs as come within the control of my Department. In view of the recent announcement by the British Board of Trade that gift parcels up to a maximum weight of 22 lb. may be imported into the United Kingdom without licence, I have decided that licences may be granted to private persons who wish to send a bona fide gift of a turkey to a friend or relative in the United Kingdom during the Christmas season. An announcement prescribing the conditions on which licences may be obtained will be made shortly.
