Vol. 103 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that almost 100 acres of bog at Ballyheeragh, Davros, and Carras, Hollymount, County Mayo, are flooded; if he is further aware that the people of this locality are without turbary plots because of this flooding; and if he will take immediate action to relieve the situation.

Representations have been received for the cleaning and renewal of drains constructed by the Land Commission when the lands and turbary in this locality were divided many years ago, but the Deputy will understand that the Land Commission cannot undertake responsibility for the maintenance of these and other similar works throughout the country.

Such maintenance is the primary concern of the landholders and turfcutters affected, but the Government provides generous assistance under the rural improvements scheme for suitable works of this class.
