Vol. 103 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bus Shelters.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that an agreement, dated the 11th December, 1944, was made between Córas Iompair Éireann and the Dublin Corporation wherein the former guaranteed the erection of bus shelters at various stopping places in the City of Dublin; further, that this agreement has not been carried into effect; if he is also aware that the Dublin Corporation undertook the maintenance of the shelters to be erected; and if he will cause an inquiry to be held into the failure to implement the agreement.

I am aware that the Dublin United Transport Company made an arrangement with the Dublin Corporation in December, 1944, under which the corporation undertook to maintain bus shelters which the transport company proposed to erect.

I have no functions in regard to the enforcement of that agreement.

In view of the fact that the transport company are a monopoly, due to the action of this House, will the Minister not see that they give the public a proper service of shelters as promised? Has he any power to make them complete the contract signed between the two parties?

It is a matter for the Dublin Corporation to enforce any rights that they have under the agreement.

But have they any rights in the matter at all in view of the fact that this is a monopoly created by this House?

Whether the Dublin Corporation have any rights under that agreement is a matter for their legal advisers.

And the public have to suffer in the meantime.
