Vol. 104 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Linen.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the world-wide demand now existing and likely to continue, for Irish linen; whether in view of such demand and in order to foster a lucrative export trade, he will consider the question of setting up a linen manufacturing industry on broad state lines such as that controlling the sugar industry and thus encourage the development of flax cultivation so suitable to our soil and climate.

I am aware that there is a demand abroad for Irish linen, a large proportion of which was previously produced for export and, not-withstanding the general shortage of textile materials, arrangements have been made to permit the linen manufacturers to export portion of their current production so that they may re-establish contacts in overseas markets. I do not consider that the further development of the linen industry should be undertaken by State enterprise. I am prepared to give every assistance to any practical proposal put to me for the extension of the industry by private enterprise.

Will the Minister consider extending the facilities for the exportation of Irish lace which at present is prohibited, with the result that the industry is being killed?

Will the Minister take into consideration the importance of the flax-growing industry and will he give an indication that it is the intention of the Government to establish a linen factory——

The Deputy will be able to express his views on that subject on the Flax Bill, which will be under discussion to-day.

I hope the Minister will not persist in the attitude taken up by the Government in establishing all factories in Dublin.
