Vol. 104 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swords Postal Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will be prepared to make arrangements for a later postal collection in Swords or if he will extend the time for the existing collection until 8 p.m.; and further, if he will be prepared to have a second daily delivery inaugurated for Swords.

The latest hour of posting at Swords at which correspondence could connect with the outgoing night mails from Dublin for the South and West of Ireland is 5.40. A later despatch from Swords would not, therefore, be in the public interest and the volume of correspondence available would not warrant an additional despatch. I have considered the question of providing a second arrival and delivery at Swords. At present, correspondence posted in the General Post Office, College Green and Pearse Street Sorting Office up to 5 a.m. is delivered in Swords commencing at 8.30 a.m. This delivery also includes night mail correspondence received from the provinces. The small quantity of correspondence that would benefit by a second delivery would not, I regret, warrant the expenditure which would be involved.

Is the Minister aware that there was a second delivery there under the British régime?

There has been a great deal of reorganisation since then.
