Vol. 105 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Martyn Estate (Mayo).

asked the Minister for Lands if he will immediately resume or acquire the Martyn Estate, at present owned by a Miss Arroll, in the townland of Curraghmore, Ballinrobe, County Mayo, to relieve the acute congestion in the locality; and if not, why.

The Land Commission do not propose to take steps to acquire these lands.

Will the Minister say why?

Because they have made up their minds, apparently, that it would not be good public policy to do so.

Am I to take it from the Minister that in cases where tenants in the locality are pressing for a farm and the owner of that farm is willing to part with it, even at the low price that the Land Commission will give, even then the Land Commission will not move?

It is not always evidence of good policy that the tenants would press to have certain things done.

Perhaps some colonel from England will come across and take over the property.

The working of the Land Commission is an eternal puzzle to me. Perhaps it is that I am dull and stupid.
