Vol. 105 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Abbey.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he is aware of the recent appeal made by His Holiness the Pope for financial assistance to secure the restoration of Monte Cassino Abbey; and if it is proposed to make a State contribution for this purpose.

I am aware of the appeal made by the Holy Father in His recent Encyclical Letter. The Arch Abbey of Monte Cassino may be regarded as the cradle of our western civilisation, and its destruction was one of the great tragedies of the war. I am sure there are people in this country who will be proud to have a part in its restoration and will be ready to share in the necessary expense.

It is not proposed, however, to ask the Dáil to vote a contribution for this purpose out of public funds. I think the matter may safely be left to private initiative and generosity under the direction of the Hierarchy.
