Vol. 105 No. 10

Written Answers. - Inland Fishery Catches.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total value of the catch of inland fisheries, during each of the years, 1944, 1945 and 1946; and also, separately for salmon, sea-trout and eels, the quantity and value of the catch in each of these years.

Particulars as to quantity and value of the salmon and sea-trout taken by persons licensed to angle or net for these fish have been collected only for each alternate year from 1927 to 1945. From 1946 onwards the figures will be gathered every year. The particulars sought by the Deputy are, therefore, not available in respect of 1944, and those for 1946 are still in process of compilation. The figures for 1945 are as follows:—

Quantity of Catch

Value

Cwt.

£

Salmon

9,095

140,787

Sea Trout

388

5,000

TOTALS

9,483

145,787

In the case of eels, I understand that virtually the entire catch is exported. The quantity and value of exports for the years mentioned were: 3,115 cwts. value £40,029 in 1944, 3,173 cwts. value £53,859 in 1945, and 3,109 cwts. value £52,603 in 1946.

The particulars asked for in respect of the remaining categories of inland fisheries—brown trout and coarse freshwater fish (pike, bream, perch, etc.)— have not been collected.
