Vol. 105 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Construction and Reconstruction of Hotels and Boarding Houses.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of money and building materials used in the construction and reconstruction of hotels and guest houses in the years 1944, 1945, 1946, and to date in 1947.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of permits for cement, timber and other building materials, for use in the construction and reconstruction of hotels and guest houses granted in the years 1944, 1945 and 1946, and to date in 1947; and if he will state the names and addresses of persons to whom such permits were issued, and the quantities and value of building materials sanctioned in each case.

I propose to take Questions 5 and 22 together.

The only statistics available on this subject are the statistics compiled under the Control of Building Order. That Order did not come into operation until 1st July, 1945, and applies only to building operations costing more than £500 or involving the use of materials costing more than £250.

Licences issued under the Order for the construction or reconstruction of hotels or guest houses authorised an expenditure of the following amounts during the following periods:—

£

1st July, 1945, to 31st December, 1945,

80,800

1st January, 1946, to 31st December, 1946,

288,100

1st January, 1947 to 31st March, 1947

116,200

The statistics compiled in the Department relating to the quantities of materials needed for licensed building work do not show separately the quantities required for hotels and guest houses. Cement and timber are the only building materials which are subject to control and the records kept regarding the issue of permits to authorise purchases do not distinguish between purchases made for the construction or reconstruction of guest houses and purchases made for other purposes.
