Vol. 105 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Bogs.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the inadequate road system at Castlekelly Bog; if so, if he will request the Dublin County Council to provide adequate roads there; and if he will state if he is prepared to give a grant to the county council for this purpose.

I have been informed that the question of road works in this bog has been considered by the commissioner for the county council and that an application for grant will be submitted shortly to the Department.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the difficulties experienced by private turf producers in getting turf off the County Dublin bogs owing to the inadequate road system on these bogs; and if so, if he is prepared to make a grant for road construction to bog owners who lease turf banks.

Grants can be made available out of sub-head K of the Vote for the Department in cases where bogs have been acquired by county councils and let to private producers. The Dublin County Council has acquired bogland under Emergency Powers (No. 310) Order, 1944, at Castlekelly and Glencullen. As regards roadwork at Castlekelly, I would refer the Deputy to the reply to his separate question relating to this bog. I have been informed that no private producers have been granted lettings in the area acquired by the county council at Glencullen where turf is being produced only for the needs of the council's institutions.

Do I understand that there is no bog available for private producers at Glencullen? As I understand it, the position in Glencullen is that there are banks suitable for the private production of turf but private producers cannot get the turf off these banks owing to defective roads.

The only information I can give the Deputy is that the Glencullen bog is being used for producing turf for institutions.
