Vol. 106 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illegal Sale of Pigs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that approximately one-half of the pigs produced in the country are being illegally cured and sold at prices in excess of those fixed by Order; if he is further aware that the Pigs and Bacon Commission have failed to enforce the regulations prohibiting illegal curing; and if he will, accordingly, take steps to have these regulations enforced by the Garda Síochána.

It is impossible to say to what extent illegal curing of pigs is carried on. I know that the suggestion contained in the question that one-half of the pigs produced in the country are being illegally cured is a gross exaggeration. I am satisfied that all possible action to prevent illegal curing is being taken by the Pigs and Bacon Commission and I am not prepared to take steps to have the regulations prohibiting illegal curing enforced by the Garda Síochána.

How long does it take to prosecute in an ordinary case of illegal curing of bacon?

I have no idea. I do not think that the commission would be responsible for any delay in bringing prosecutions.

Is the Minister aware that in the case of some prosecutions it took at least 12 months to prepare the cases and bring offenders into court?

The Deputy, being an experienced solicitor, would be aware why these delays take place.

Does Deputy Moran wish to stop the ordinary farmer from killing his own pig?

I am not suggesting any such thing.

In my own town, Shaw Brothers are on short time for the last six years. Will the Minister see that the pigs are equally distributed?

That is a separate question.
