Vol. 106 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - External Assets.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state how the increase of £20,000,000 in our external assets, during 1946, was made up.

The following increases in external assets occurred during 1946. The headings are the same as those of items I (a) to (e), 2, 3 and 4 of the Balance of International Payments Statement for 1945, which was published in the September, 1946, issue of the Irish Trade Journal:

£ million

1. Government transactions

8.0

2. Changes in External Funds of the Central Bank

2.7

3. Banking transactions—changes in net external assets

7.1

4. Purchases and sales of securities by private holders through Irish stockbrokers and banks (net)

2.7

This gives a total increase of £20.5 million, which is expected to be offset as to about £1 million by contra movements recorded under items (5) to (9) of the statement.
