Vol. 106 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air-Mail Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that letters posted for air-mail delivery are, in many cases, sent by ordinary mail overseas, with consequent undue delay and waste of the air-mail fee; and whether he has under consideration the provision of special air-mail letter boxes to avoid mistakes of this nature.

Correspondence fully prepaid for air transmission bearing the prescribed blue label, or plainly marked "air-mail", is regularly forwarded by air. Mistreatment is of very rare occurrence. I am, however, aware that large numbers of packets are posted every day, marked for air-mail conveyance but insufficiently prepaid. Such packets are, in accordance with the regulations, sent forward by ordinary mail. The provision of special posting boxes for air-mail correspondence would not be justified. Such correspondence posted in the ordinary boxes invariably secures due despatch.
