Vol. 106 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Cement.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, with reference to supplies of cement, what is the present, position and the present method of distribution of the available supplies.

In each week of the month of May, the quantity of cement available amounted to something more than 60 per cent. of the quantity available in the corresponding period of last year. The demand for cement is, however, now substantially greater than in 1946.

For the month of June, it is expected that the quantity of cement that will be available in each week will be equal to 80 per cent. of the supply in June, 1946. It is hoped to maintain output at this rate until the end of August, by which time output will be equal to all demands.

Of the cement now being supplied, approximately two-thirds is reserved for persons with special priority permits. Special priority permits are issued only to those building and constructional projects which, in the general interests of the community, it is desirable to complete as soon as possible. The other third is being issued to cement merchants for distribution by them in small lots to the persons whose needs are most urgent.

What percentage of the cement available is being allotted for the building of houses for the working and middle classes?

I should require notice of that question. The granting of building permits for housing activities undertaken by local authorities is a function of my Department, and I can only say that no application for a building permit by a local authority has been refused.
