Vol. 107 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Bird Seed.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that small parcels of bird seed are being held up and not permitted to pass through the post to Great Britain; that this seed originally came from Great Britain and was being reexported by the retail trade here, in small postal packets, to their pre-war customers; and if he will allow this business to be carried on without interruption.

The exportation of bird seed, except under licence granted by the Minister for Agriculture, is prohibited by Emergency Powers (Control of Export) Order, 1940. I am aware that relatively large numbers of parcels containing bird seed addressed to places outside the State have recently been seized by the custom authorities owing to the absence of an export licence. I understand that the parcels were returned to the senders where application was made and a satisfactory explanation given of the breach of the regulations.
