Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports from Hard-Currency Countries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what commodities of importance to our economy, hitherto imported from hard-currency countries, are likely to be affected by the shortage of hard currency; and if he will state what arrangements have been made for securing their supplies during the next 12 months.

I do not consider it opportune at the moment to make a statement in regard to the matters referred to in the Deputy's question. The Deputy may be assured, however, that the position continues to receive very close examination.

Can the Minister say when he expects to be in a position to make a statement on the matter?

It is difficult to answer that question. It will depend upon other factors.

Does the Minister appreciate the difficulties under which members of the commercial and trading community are labouring at the present time and can he say if any discussions have gone on between himself and any section of the trading community with regard to this matter?

The community can only be affected so far as long-term plans are concerned. Individual firms or organisations desiring to make arrangements for the importation of goods at the present time can be informed, and are being informed, whether the necessary exchange facilities will be extended to them.
