Vol. 110 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Kerry Turf Producers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that no Government direction has so far been given to private turf producers in regard to the new season's production and whether, in view of the fact that the majority of turf producers of South Kerry are entirely dependent on this industry, he will undertake to give some assurance that this crop will be purchased at an economic price, and that he will also arrange for the disposal of the large stocks at present in the dumps and in the bogs so that the same arrangements can be continued as in the past.

At no time has the Government given directions to private turf producers—who are, and have been, entirely free agents. In recent years, these producers have been urged to make every effort to meet the general shortage of fuel, and production was stimulated by a guaranteed market for all well-saved turf offered at a reasonable price. The general fuel situation has changed radically in recent months and the whole question of turf production is at present being reviewed in the light of the altered circumstances, including the stocks at present available. An announcement will be made as soon as possible as to whether the guaranteed market of previous years can be offered for 1948 turf.

Is the Minister aware that there was an understanding, if not an actual guarantee, that private turf users could look forward to at least a five years' programme? Was there not an advertising campaign during the régime of the previous Government wherein it was suggested that private turf producers, in Kerry particularly, as well as in other counties, could look forward to a five years' programme, a five years' programme of industrial output, so far as they were concerned?

I am not aware that such a guarantee was given, or, if it was, at what time or for what period.

Can the Minister say when the comprehensive statement he has promised in respect of the supply of turf will be made? Will it be made before the recess, or has he any idea how soon it will be made?

I hope to be able to make a statement on this question of the guaranteed market for 1948 within a few days.
