Vol. 110 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Commission Report.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to publish the Report of the Shannon Commission, which inquired into the position of the Soldiers and Sailors Land Trust, and if so, when it is expected that the report will be available.

Mr. Murphy

The publication of the report would serve no useful purpose until the discussions initiated with the British Government have been brought to a conclusion and a statement of Government policy in the matter can be made. I am having the position re-examined with a view to seeing whether progress can now be made towards a solution of the questions at issue.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, does the Minister realise that the matter is one of great urgency and a matter upon which repeated representation has been made here in the House and that it has given rise to grave personal difficulties to the children of the original allottees when the original allottees die and the question of future tenancy arises? From that point of view it should be regarded as a matter of urgency.

Mr. Murphy

I am aware that it is a matter of fairly long standing and that to a considerable section of the people it is an important one. I will have the matter re-examined in the light of its importance and considerable urgency but I would like it made clear that there are very considerable difficulties in the way.
