Vol. 110 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Postal and Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will investigate the postal facilities of the Clonakilty, Roscarbery, Leap and Skibbereen districts, with a view to ensuring that there will not be the present considerable delay in deliveries, particularly of week-end post.

Postal facilities in the Clonakilty, Roscarbery, Leap and Skibbereen districts are dependent on the rail services available in these areas. The question of improving the arrangements has been under consideration, but owing to the expense involved, I am not in a position at the moment to say whether anything can be done to improve matters. The Deputy will be advised as soon as a decision has been arrived at.

Mr. Collins

Would the Minister not consider the advisability of using the alternative bus transport in the district for the delivery of the mails?

That is a matter that will have to be considered in connection with other points with Córas Iompair Éireann and I shall acquaint the Deputy with developments as soon as possible. Every effort will be made to meet the situation.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the inadequate nature of the telephone services between Bantry and Glengariff and Bantry and Castletownbere, and whether he will state what steps his Department has taken to remedy the position.

The delay on calls between Bantry and Glengariff and between Bantry and Castletownbere is fairly heavy during the summer season. At other times there is some delay, but it is not abnormal. It is proposed to provide extra circuits as soon as circumstances permit, but, as additional circuits are needed also on numerous other routes throughout the country, I am not in a position to say when the work on the routes in question will be undertaken. I can assure the Deputy that there will be no avoidable delay in undertaking the work.

Mr. Collins

In view of the isolated nature of this district would the Minister not consider that it should receive priority in connection with whatever additional circuits may be necessary?

We shall consider all representations made by the Deputy in connection with the matter.
