Vol. 110 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give particulars of (a) the qualifications; (b) the salaries and other emoluments, and (c) the tenure of office of the present Chairman of Córas Iompair Éireann and of the present General Manager of Córas Iompair Éireann.

The Chairman of Córas Iompair Éireann was appointed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce for a term of five years from the 1st of January, 1945, in accordance with Section 39 of the Transport Act, 1944. A statement of the appointment was presented to both Houses of the Oireachtas. Prior to that date he had held the positions of Chairman of the Great Southern Railways Company and Managing Director of the Dublin United Transport Company, Limited.

The functions of the Minister for Industry and Commerce in regard to Córas Iompair Éireann are set out in the Transport Act, 1944. Under that Act, I have no function in regard to the remuneration of the chairman or any member of the board other than that contained in sub-section (10) of Section 39, which provides that if the Minister for Industry and Commerce is of opinion that the remuneration of the chairman is insufficient he may, after consultation with the Minister for Finance, direct that such remuneration shall be increased. No action has been taken under this sub-section.

The appointment of the general manager and the terms of his employment rest with the company. I have no functions in connection with this appointment.
