Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Production Employment.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the average number of persons employed on turf production by local authorities during the week corresponding to that which ends on April 10th, 1948, during the period 1942 to 1947, inclusive.

The average number of persons (exclusive of engineers and office staffs) employed by local authorities on all work connected with turf production during the fortnight corresponding to that which ended on 10th April, 1948, during the period 1942 to 1947, inclusive, was 10,829. Weekly figures are not available.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of persons employed by local authorities in producing turf during the week ending April 10th, 1948, and in the corresponding week of each year from 1942 to 1947, inclusive.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle the reply in the form of a tabular statement will be circulated in the Official Report. The information is available for the fortnight ended 10th April, 1948, and the corresponding periods in the earlier years from 1942 onwards.

*Local authorities did not participate in turf production for Fuel Importers Ltd. after 31st December, 1947. The number of persons employed in the fortnight ended 10th April, 1948, in handling turf that had been cut in previous years was 256.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the total number of staff employed by local bodies on turf production on (a) 1st April, 1946, and (b) 1st April, 1947.

As regards employees other than office workers or engineers, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 12.

On the 1st April, 1946, 117 permanent clerks and 120 permanent engineers were engaged part-time on turf production in addition to carrying out their normal duties. On the same date 40 temporary clerks and 21 temporary engineers were employed, and in practically all cases their whole time was devoted to work arising out of turf production.

On 1st April, 1947, the numbers employed were 109 permanent clerks and 122 permanent engineers and 29 temporary clerks and 27 temporary engineers.
