Vol. 110 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Applicants for Houses.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of applications received by the Dublin Corporation and the Dublin County Council for houses from (a) persons with families, and (b) newly-weds; and if, in view of the existing housing shortage in Dublin, he can indicate when these people will be accommodated.

Mr. Murphy

I understand that the Dublin Corporation have 15,000 applications for houses from persons with families and 1,000 from persons recently married. In the case of County Dublin, no waiting list for labourers' cottages is maintained. The housing needs of the working classes in the county have been estimated by the housing authority at 2,000. A scheme for the provision of about 1,000 cottages is at present in progress. As regards houses for newly-weds in Dublin City, it would not be possible at this stage to state when all eligible applicants for houses will be accommodated. I am going into the whole matter personally on the lines which I have indicated in my reply to-day to another question on this subject.
