Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Galway Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is proposed to acquire the lands of Mrs. Burke, known as Tohermore Farm, at Tohermore, Teram, County Galway, for relief of congestion in the locality.

The question of the acquisition of lands owned by Mrs. R. M. Burke, Toghermore, County Galway, is under consideration but the Land Commission are not in a position to state at this stage if or when the lands will be acquired.

I would like if the Minister would impress on the Land Commission the urgency in this connection because a great portion of the land is let in conacre at the present time while the price of conacre has jumped to approximately twice what it was last year, and also because of the fact that some years ago there was a poultry station there which was dropped recently. These points should be taken into consideration. I consider that there is great urgency in this connection.

I will convey the Deputy's remarks to the commissioners.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is proposed to acquire at an early date turbary on the McDonnell estate, at Clonascragh, Tuam.

The question of the acquisition of the turbary at Clonascragh on the McDonnell estate, County Galway, is under consideration, but at the present stage it is not possible to state whether this turbary will be required.

Is the Minister aware that for about a radius of ten to 15 miles, and particularly from there in to Claregalway, there is no other turbary and, further, that this bog has been used by the Galway County Council for the purposes of a peat scheme in that district for a long time. The tenants in that locality, who have no turbary, are anxious to see the Land Commission take action in this matter quickly. I would, therefore, urge the Land Commission to go ahead with it.

I will do that. No representations have been made from that area to my Department on the question of turbary.
