Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Mayo Holdings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Winifred Harkan, Carrowlackey, Kilmovee, County Mayo, is in possession of an untenanted farm of 45 acres and if he will take steps to have this land acquired for the relief of local congestion.

Representations have recently been received from the tenants in the vicinity of this holding stating that the lands were about to be sold and requesting the Land Commission to acquire them. The matter will be submitted to the commissioners at an early date for a ruling.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that Mrs. Glynn, Carnacross, Ballyvary, County Mayo, is in possession of a holding of land; if he is further aware that this holding was recently sold and if he will proceed to acquire it for the relief of local congestion.

As inquiries are not yet completed I would ask the Deputy to repeat the question in about three weeks.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps have been taken to acquire the farms of William Reilly, Caranahan, Balla, County Mayo, and Patrick Clarke, Caranahan, Balla, County Mayo, for the relief of local congestion

Proceedings are in progress for the acquisition of the lands of Carrownahaum owned by the representatives of William Reilly.

Possession of the lands of the late Patrick Clarke at Carrownahaun, Balla, was obtained last month.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that considerable congestion exists in the townland of Garrywaddrean, Claremorris, County Mayo; if he is further aware that two untenanted holdings of land were sold recently in this locality, and if he will take steps to have these holdings acquired for the relief of the small landholders of the townland.

The Land Commission are aware that two small holdings were recently sold in the townland of Garrywaddrean to two brothers who reside with their parents and three brothers and five sisters on an adjoining small holding at £9 10s. 0d. valuation.

Is the Minister aware that in this locality the two small holdings in question, which were recently sold, have been untenanted for over 20 years? I think that if the Land Commission were to take over these holdings it would help to relieve the congestion which is very acute in that locality.

In this townland there are 12 holdings ranging, roughly, from 45/- to £7. The taking over of these two holdings at the moment would not raise all the uneconomic holdings to a proper economic level. I understand that the Land Commission are taking up the case of this particular townland in the very near future and, when that happens, the question of the acquisition of these two holdings will be considered.

Am I to understand that the Land Commission have proceeded to investigate these two holdings with a view to taking them over?

That is so.
