Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigs and Poultry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he will take steps to encourage the rearing of pigs and poultry by agricultural workers on their own holdings.

I am of opinion that the attractive prices now assured for eggs, the possibility of increased supplies of Indian meal at a more reasonable price and the fact that agricultural workers are eligible for grants under the poultry development scheme offer sufficient inducement to such workers to engage in poultry-keeping. I do not expect any appreciable number of agricultural workers to engage in the rearing of pigs but I would welcome a return by these workers to the practice of fattening a pig or two per annum, a practice which should prove economical as supplies of Indian meal and other feeding stuffs become more plentiful.
