Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Mangel Seed.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that mangold seed is very dear and scarce; and, if so, whether he will endeavour to import supplies which can be made available to farmers at a reasonable price.

I am aware of the scarcity and high price of mangel seed; special conditions made it impossible for me to remedy this situation this year, but I am having this matter examined with a view to ensuring that no recurrence of this situation will occur in the future.

Can the Minister explain why mangel seed should be at least three or four times as dear as beet seed? Both beet and mangel seed are produced in this country under very similar circumstances, and why should there be this difference in price?

The answer is "not convincingly."
