Vol. 110 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Milk Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if in view of the dissatisfaction expressed by various public bodies in Cork City regarding the limited supplies of milk available, particularly in the winter period, he will consider the extension of the present boundaries of the milk board areas so as to secure ample supplies of milk for the city.

I am of opinion that the extension suggested in the Deputy's question would not result in any appreciable increase in milk supplies to Cork City in periods of scarcity, while it might result in the offering of excessive quantities when milk is plentiful.

The present production district, with the addition of other registered suppliers, should be sufficient to meet the city's normal requirements, and the Cork Milk Board has successfully arranged for the provision of additional supplies on occasions of shortage or abnormal demand. Moreover, if suppliers in the existing area make special exertions to meet the milk requirements of the city, I feel that they should be reassured that their exertions are appreciated and that their market will not be unnecessarily flooded with milk unless and until demand outstrips supply.

Is the Minister aware that there are not adequate supplies in the City of Cork and also that members of the agricultural community in the milk board area, who are paying the milk board rate of wages, are not allowed to send the milk in there, except through creameries? Furthermore, is it a fact that some creameries in that area where some agricultural producers must send their milk are sending the milk for other production, such as chocolate? If the Minister gets proof that the milk supplies are not adequate, will he consider the possibility of doing something to increase the supplies, either in the way of an improve ment in production or an extension o the milk board area?

If there is any matter requiring examination relating to the milk supply of the City of Cork, and if the Deputy will direct my attention to it, I shall be most happy to discuss it with him and take any steps necessary to put it right.
